The Tohoku Earthquake, the biggest in recorded history rocked Japan on 11th March 2011. The massive tsunami that inundated much of the nearby Sendai coastal region was responsible for more than 10,000 fatalities.
Houses and cars were simply swept away by the wall of water, and farmland ruined. The tsunami badly damaged the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant, which led to the most serious nuclear incident since Chernobyl and the release of radioactive materials into the air and water. The natural disaster and the devastation it wreaked is now considered the greatest challenge to face Japan since the end of World War II.
