When planning the presentation for the American Club to raise awareness about carbon emissions, we wanted to make it light-hearted, accessible to kids and families and of course fun. So we worked with the club, David Brown at BEC and students from Li Po Chun United World College of Hong Kong (a Cap and Trade school) to design a 10-minute show that would fit the bill.
The presentation needed to deliver 3 key points. The first was to help the audience to understand a little more about just how much effort has to be put in to power a light bulb. With the help of the electric bike, we scripted a little piece about our hard-working student Colin, driven to pass his English exams but hampered by a power cut. Next we wanted to relate the behind-the-scenes activities that allow us to simply switch on a light, starting with the mining of the coal all the way through to the generation of electricity in a power station. Finally, we wanted to help the audience quantify carbon emissions from everyday items in use in Hong Kong, such as computers and air conditioners and everyday actions such as taking a shower. We used black balloons filled with helium to accurately display the quantity of carbon dioxide emissions generated. The Li Po Chun Students did a fabulous job of breathing life into the performance on the day.
