After an invitation from Oxford Study Courses (www.osc-ib.com), we played the Carbon Trading Game for a group of pre-IB students on a lovely summer day in Somerville College, Oxford, UK. The tranquil setting was juxtaposed with the near-carnage that unfolded as the game started. We got the impression that the students took the competition really seriously and were not taking prisoners.
Early into the game, the World Bank was forced to call an amnesty as someone had knicked one of their key resources from right under their noses! (The amnesty worked and the world order was restored for a short while.)
The contrast with the mostly gentle and cooperative game a couple of weeks before in a local Hong Kong primary school was quite profound. All in all it was great fun and the game was very well-received by all participants. Many real-world problems emerged from the game, and these were brought to light in a memorable way that proved good food for thought for the students.
Thanks to Julie at OSC for all the arrangements.
