What is Community Carbon Offsetting?

Carbon Offsetting

Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that we are all responsible for emitting because of the transportation we take, the electricity we use and things we consume.  Many people concerned about Climate Change try to reduce their personal emissions but modern life makes some level of emissions inevitable.  Offsetting is the process where  individuals donate money to projects that reduce carbon emissions (such as wind farms) to counteract their remaining emissions.

Community Carbon Offsetting

Community Carbon Offsetting is a new idea.  Instead of the offset money going to support projects that are remote from the donor, we will put the money back into the community where the donor lives to support activities and projects that reduce local greenhouse gas emissions. So now, if you take a flight to London and back from Hong Kong, you can support a local school for example. We send the money to those schools that already have programmes in place that have reduced their greenhouse gas emissions.
