Cap and Trade for Hong Kong Schools

Hong Kong Schools Cap and Trade Carbon Emissions

light

Cap and Trade is normally only discussed by a few policy makers, with the result that few of the general public has ever heard of it. Applied in our way, however, it brings real and measurable environmental benefits and enormous educational and awareness benefits.

Our programme brings Cap and Trade into schools to help encourage the reduction of wasteful consumption of electricity. It’s ignited a lot of interest, both within schools where they see the opportunities to educate and benefit financially and outside of schools, where many organizations are looking for effective ways to promote positive action against climate change.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Schools sign an agreement with Teng Hoi Conservation Organization
  2. A cap on electricity consumption is agreed
  3. Schools run educational programmes with our help to reduce electricity consumption
  4. At the end of the year, savings of electricity are converted into tonnes of CO2, or Community Carbon Credits
  5. Community Carbon Credits are sold to those individuals and companies wishing to offset their emissions and support the efforts of the schools.
  6. Proceeds from the sale of offsets are returned to a special environment fund in the school that is reserved for environmental activities.

Outline

Your school is invited to participate in a novel system aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. If your school makes verifiable reductions in its electricity consumption, then this project will lead to your school being paid for the reduction in the carbon emissions in addition to the obvious reduction in your electricity bill. There is no charge for joining the pilot project, however your school will need to undertake a formal agreement with us.

Background

Cap and Trade is a system being seriously examined as the successor to the Kyoto Protocol by the UN and is advocated by individual governments (see below) as the most suitable mechanism for delivering real reductions of carbon emissions that lead to climate change.
